Pune's Must-visit Heritage sites

Pune is home to many historical monuments, temples, museums, and forts that showcase the city's glorious past. In this blog post, I will share with you some of the most amazing heritage sites in Pune that you should not miss.
1. Shaniwar Wada: This is a majestic fort that was built by the Peshwas, the rulers of the Maratha Empire, in the 18th century. The fort has witnessed many important events in Indian history, such as the assassination of Peshwa Narayanrao and the Third Anglo-Maratha War. The fort is famous for its grand architecture, intricate carvings, and massive gates. You can also enjoy a light and sound show in the evening that narrates the history of the fort.
2. Aga Khan Palace: This is a stunning palace that was built by Sultan Muhammed Shah Aga Khan III in 1892. The palace is a symbol of India's freedom struggle, as it served as a prison for Mahatma Gandhi and his wife Kasturba Gandhi during the Quit India Movement. The palace also houses a museum that displays the personal belongings and photographs of Gandhi and other freedom fighters. The palace is surrounded by beautiful gardens and fountains that add to its charm.
3. Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum: This is a unique museum that showcases the personal collection of Dr. Dinkar G. Kelkar, a passionate art lover and collector. The museum has over 20,000 artifacts from different parts of India, ranging from paintings, sculptures, musical instruments, weapons, textiles, coins, and toys. The museum also has a special section dedicated to Mastani, the second wife of Peshwa Bajirao I, who was a legendary figure in Maratha history.
4. Parvati Hill Temple: This is a sacred hill that has five temples dedicated to various Hindu gods and goddesses. The main temple is dedicated to Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva. The hill offers a panoramic view of the city and is also a popular spot for trekking and hiking. The hill also has a museum that displays the history and culture of Pune. On this hill, you can find a 100-year-old Chafa i.e. Frangipani tree!
5. Pataleshwar Cave Temple: This is an ancient rock-cut temple that dates back to the 8th century AD. The temple is carved out of a single basalt rock and has a circular sanctum that houses a Shiva linga. The temple also has a Nandi mandapa, a hall with pillars and sculptures of various deities. The temple is an example of the Rashtrakuta style of architecture and is a protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India.
